This area englobes the mountainous massif of the Serra da Estrela. In the area there are the following habitats: plateaus, mountains with steep rocky slopes, deep valleys, rocky outcrops, mountain meadows, standing fresh water, watercourses, woods, farmlands and forests. The forests consist, depending on the altitude, on oaks, chestnut trees, maritime pines, firs and cedars. The bushes are made, depending on the altitude, by gorse, heather, montpellier cistus, scotch broom and junipers.

Ornithological importance

In this area there is a record of the Short-toed Snake-eagle (Circaetus gallicus), the Northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis), the Eurasian Eagle-owl (Bubo bubo), the Black Stork (Ciconia nigra), the Common Quail (Coturnix coturnix), the Tawny Owl (Strix aluco), the Spotless Starling (Sturnus unicolor), the Bonelli's Warbler (Phylloscopus bonelli), the Red-billed Chough (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax), the Eurasian Sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus), the Rufous-tailed Rock-thrush (Monticola saxatilis), the White-throated Dipper (Cinclus cinclus), the Eurasian Skylark (Alauda arvensis), the Rock Sparrow (Petronia petronia), the Tawny Pipit (Anthus campestris), the Montagu's Harrier (Circus pygargus) and the Ortolan Bunting (Emberiza hortulana).
