Description

This area englobes the border valley of Douro river and its tributary the Agueda river and adjacent uplands, in an extension of about 120km. In the area there are the following habitats: watercourses, deep valleys stuck in the northern part and more open in the southern part, with limited human disturbance, steep rocky slopes, farms planted with olive, citrus and almond trees, forests, woods and reservoirs.
In the forests the holm oak, cork oak, oak and juniper predominate and on the woods the rockrose and broom.
In the plateaus there are forests, woods and farms with cereal crops and vineyards where extensive livestock farming is practiced.

Ornithological importance

In this area there is a record of 150 species. This area is important because provides the appropriate conditions to rupiculous species nesting, and in which concentrates a large percentage of the national population. Highlight to the Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus), the Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), the Bonelli's Eagle (Hieraaetus fasciatus), the Alpine Swift (Apus melba), the Eurasian Eagle-owl (Bubo bubo), the Black Stork (Ciconia nigra), the Black Wheatear (Oenanthe leucura), the Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus), the Red-billed Chough (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax) and the Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus). Regarding the species whose habitats are Mediterranean and pseudo-steppe zones highlight to the Eurasian Thick-knee (Burhinus oedicnemus), the Common Quail (Coturnix coturnix), the Bonelli's Warbler (Phylloscopus bonelli), the Montagu's Harrier (Circus pygargus), the Calandra Lark (Melanocorypha calandra), the Greater Short-toed Lark (Calandrella brachydactyla), the Eurasian Woodcock (Scolopax rusticola), the Merlin (Falco columbarius), the Little Bustard (Tetrax tetrax) and the Red Kite (Milvus milvus), the latter having a significant population in this area.
